2009 Southeastern Sun Grant Regional Competitive Grants Program Announced

July 27, 2009

The Southeastern Sun Grant Center is pleased to announce its 2009 Regional Competitive Grants Program. Funds are available to support research, education and outreach projects in the following strategic focus areas:

§  Feedstock supply logistics – harvest, transportation, and storage of bioenergy crops present serious challenges to economic viability of the biorefinery. The solicitation encourages proposals exploring new methods of delivery and preprocessing renewable crops prior to conversion.
§
Engineering of agricultural and woody crops – biotechnology is clearly playing a significant role in the production of biobased materials. The solicitation seeks proposals addressing new bioenergy crops designed with traits to improve their separation and conversion performance in biorefinery operation.
§  New conversion processes for production of chemicals and fuels – the biorefinery will have access to a number of structurally diverse building blocks. The solicitation seeks proposals describing new methods for converting these building blocks into final products. Research projects addressing aspects of both biochemical and thermochemical platform are of interest.

The Southeastern Sun Grant Center (SESGC) expects to award up to $2.5 M in competitive grants in 2009 and seeks proposals from qualified institutions. Funds from the Department of Transportation have been authorized for FY 2009 through FY 2012. Proposals will be accepted with budgets within the floor of $50,000 and ceiling of $250,000. Project durations of 1 year to a maximum of 3 years are acceptable.

Application

Pre-proposals are required and due by August 21, 2009.
